JUNGLE GYM SLATE II:
ONE AND SEVEN HOUSES

Los Angeles Design Weekend | Collective Arts Incubator

2026, Los Angeles, CA

The project draws a conceptual connection to Joseph Kosuth’s seminal work One and Three Chairs, in which a chair is presented through three forms of representation: the physical object, its photograph, and its lexical definition. Kosuth’s work asks us to consider how an object comes into meaning through its physical form, its representation, or the ideas we attach to it linguistically. One and Seven Houses takes this inquiry as its point of departure, extending it into the realm of material by considering the house as an idea multiplied across seven out-of-scale objects.

The work emerged from questions we have been asking ourselves after the 2025 wildfires that swept through Los Angeles and erased entire neighborhoods. It deliberately operates between object and architecture, between something intimate enough to hold and something large enough to partially inhabit.

Instead of the scale of the city, One and Seven Houses work at the scale of the body; an out-of-scale seat, a partial shelter, and a handful of small houses you can hold in your palm. Together they ask what we build with, and what we hope that means. The stool holds those questions without answering them.
